An examination of a person's body, property, or premises by law enforcement to look for evidence of a crime. This action constitutes a governmental intrusion into an individual's reasonable expectation of privacy. Under the Fourth Amendment, searches usually require a warrant based on probable cause or must fall under a recognized exception to the warrant requirement.
