Search and seizure

The process by which law enforcement officers examine a person or property and take possession of items found during that examination. This action is governed by the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures. Evidence obtained in violation of these protections may be excluded from trial under the exclusionary rule.
