Exclusionary rule

  1. A legal principle that prohibits the use of illegally obtained evidence in a criminal trial. This rule is intended to deter law enforcement from conducting unlawful searches and seizures, thereby protecting Fourth Amendment rights. Evidence obtained in violation of a defendant's constitutional rights is generally inadmissible in court.

  2. Doctrine that says evidence obtained in violation of a criminal defendant's constitutional or statutory rights is not admissible at trial.
