North Atlantic Treaty Organization

An intergovernmental military alliance formed by several North American and European countries, established in 1949. Its primary purpose is to guarantee the freedom and security of its members through political and military means. Article 5 of the NATO treaty states that an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all, triggering collective self-defense.
