Collateral attack

An attempt to challenge the validity of a judgment or order in a separate proceeding rather than through a direct appeal in the original case. This type of challenge typically occurs in a different court or a new lawsuit. Habeas corpus petitions are a common form of collateral attack on criminal convictions.
