Collateral descendant

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-001051

A person who descends from a collateral relative of an individual, such as a niece, nephew or cousin, rather than from that individual in the direct line. The label contrasts with a lineal descendant, which covers children, grandchildren and later offspring. Intestacy statutes name collateral descendants as heirs only when no closer relatives survive.
