Rebus sic stantibus

A legal doctrine in international law allowing for a treaty to be terminated or modified due to a fundamental change of circumstances. This principle applies only if the unforeseen change radically transforms the extent of obligations under the treaty. The Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties addresses this doctrine.
