Paramount title

A title or claim to property that is superior to the title of the person in possession and therefore defeats that person's rights. The term appears in warranty deeds and title insurance, where the grantor's covenants protect the grantee against a title paramount held by a third party. A superior outstanding title, such as one held by a true owner with an earlier valid conveyance, is a typical example.
