Periodic tenancy

A leasehold estate that continues for successive periods of time until terminated by proper notice from either the landlord or the tenant. The tenancy automatically renews at the end of each period, such as month-to-month or year-to-year, unless notice is given. The required notice period for termination is often specified by state law or the lease agreement.
