Post hoc
Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-003812
A Latin phrase meaning "after this," used to describe reasoning that mistakenly concludes that because one event happened after another, the first event must have caused the second. This logical fallacy, fully named post hoc ergo propter hoc, is a common error in arguments about causation in tort and contract law. A court will reject a claim of causation that relies solely on temporal sequence without further evidence of a direct link.
