Quasi-criminal (proceeding)

A legal action that is formally civil but carries penalties similar to those in a criminal case, such as fines or potential loss of liberty. These proceedings enforce public rights or punish wrongs against the public, yet they do not afford the full range of constitutional protections available to a criminal defendant. Examples include proceedings for civil contempt of court, certain traffic violations, and the forfeiture of property used in illegal activities.
