Qui tam action

A lawsuit brought by a private citizen, known as a relator, on behalf of the government, alleging fraud against the government. The relator, who must have original information about the fraud, shares in any financial recovery. These actions are authorized by statutes such as the False Claims Act in the United States, encouraging individuals to report government fraud.
