Right of representation

A principle in inheritance law where the descendants of a deceased heir inherit the share that their ancestor would have received if they had been alive. This is also known as per stirpes distribution, meaning "by roots" or "by branches." For example, if a child of the deceased has died, that child's children would divide their parent's share.
