Self-serving

Term · Law · MLC-T-LAW-004474

Describing a statement or piece of evidence, particularly one made out of court, that is presented to support the interests of the person who made it. Such evidence is viewed with skepticism by courts and fact-finders because of its inherent bias. While not automatically inadmissible, its credibility is weighed against its partial nature, and it may be excluded under hearsay rules unless a specific exception applies.
