Surplusage

Superfluous or irrelevant matter in a legal document, pleading, or contract that is not necessary to the substance of the claim or defense. While not always fatal to the instrument, it can obscure the meaning or lead to confusion. Courts may strike surplusage from pleadings upon motion by a party.
