Wiretapping

The act of secretly monitoring and recording telephone conversations or other electronic communications. In the United States, wiretapping is generally prohibited without a court order, which requires a showing of probable cause that a crime has been or is about to be committed. Federal law, specifically Title III of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act, regulates electronic surveillance.
