Wiretap

The surreptitious interception of electronic communications, such as telephone calls or internet data transmissions, by a third party without the consent of the participants. Law enforcement agencies can conduct legal wiretaps, but they must first obtain a court order or warrant based on a showing of probable cause that a specific crime has been or is being committed. Federal standards for obtaining a wiretap warrant are established by Title III of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968.
