Workmen's compensation

An older name for the statutory system of insurance that covers employees for injuries or illnesses sustained while performing their job duties. It provides fixed monetary awards for lost wages and covers medical expenses without the need for the employee to prove employer negligence. The term has largely been replaced by the gender-neutral "workers' compensation" in modern statutes and legal practice.
