General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT)

A multilateral agreement regulating international trade, established in 1947 to promote free trade among member countries by reducing tariffs and other trade barriers. It served as the primary international instrument for governing world trade until 1995, when it was superseded by the World Trade Organization (WTO). The GATT rounds of negotiations led to substantial reductions in customs duties and quotas.
