General average

A principle of maritime law where all parties involved in a sea venture proportionally share any losses voluntarily incurred to save the entire expedition from peril. This applies when cargo or ship parts are sacrificed to prevent a greater loss, such as jettisoning goods during a storm. The York-Antwerp Rules provide the international framework for adjusting general average claims.
