Adiabatic temperature changes

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003300

Variations in the temperature of an air parcel that occur solely due to changes in its pressure, without any heat exchange with its surroundings. As an air parcel rises, it expands and cools adiabatically; as it sinks, it compresses and warms adiabatically. The dry adiabatic lapse rate is approximately 9.8 degrees Celsius per kilometer.
