Moist adiabat
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001747
A line on a thermodynamic diagram representing the temperature change of a saturated air parcel as it rises or sinks adiabatically, meaning without exchanging heat with its surroundings. As the parcel rises, it cools, and water vapor condenses, releasing latent heat that reduces the rate of cooling compared to a dry adiabat. The moist adiabatic lapse rate is typically around 6.5 °C per kilometer.
The line on a Skew T-Log P chart that depicts the change in temperature of saturated air as it rises and undergoes cooling due to adiabatic expansion. As saturated air rises, the temperature changes at a rate of 0.55 degrees Celsius per 100 meters (2-3 degrees Fahrenheit per 1,000 feet). Contrast with a dry adiabat.
