Dry-adiabatic process
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005171
A thermodynamic process in the atmosphere where a parcel of unsaturated air undergoes changes in temperature solely due to expansion or compression, without any exchange of heat with its surroundings. As an air parcel rises, it expands and cools at the dry adiabatic lapse rate, which is approximately 9.8 degrees Celsius per kilometer. Conversely, a descending parcel warms at the same rate.
