Dry adiabat
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000779
A line on a thermodynamic diagram representing the temperature change of an unsaturated parcel of air as it rises or sinks adiabatically. As dry air rises, it expands and cools at a constant rate due to the decrease in atmospheric pressure, without exchanging heat with its surroundings. This cooling rate is approximately 9.8 degrees Celsius per 1000 meters.
A line of constant potential temperature on a thermodynamic chart.
