Axisymmetric

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003757

Describing a three-dimensional object, flow, or field that is symmetrical around a central axis, meaning its properties do not change with rotation about that axis. In meteorology, this assumption is applied to simplify models of rotating systems like tropical cyclones or tornadoes, where the primary circulation is treated as being uniform in the azimuthal direction. A perfectly axisymmetric tropical cyclone would appear as a set of concentric circles on a radar image, though real-world storms exhibit asymmetries.
