Babinet's principle
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003763
A principle in optics stating that the diffraction pattern produced by an opaque body is identical to that produced by an aperture of the same shape and size. The only difference is in the overall intensity and the central bright spot. This principle applies when the light source is coherent and the observation point is far from the diffracting object.
