Ballistic density
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003790
A single constant air density, used in ballistic meteorology, that stands in for the real density profile along an artillery projectile's trajectory, chosen so the projectile meets the same overall air resistance. It is worked out from observed temperature and pressure through the layers the shell crosses, alongside a ballistic wind and a ballistic temperature. Gunnery corrections use it to adjust firing tables for the day's atmosphere.
