Balloon ceiling

The ceiling classification used in United States weather observing practice when cloud height is obtained by timing a small balloon from its release until it disappears into the cloud base. The height follows from the balloon's known ascent rate multiplied by the time taken. It is a different quantity from a balloon's burst or float altitude.
