Biochemical oxygen demand
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003915
A measure of the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by aerobic microorganisms in water as they decompose organic matter. It quantifies the oxygen required for the biological degradation of pollutants in a water sample over a specific period, typically five days at 20 degrees Celsius. High BOD values indicate a greater amount of organic pollution, which can deplete oxygen levels and harm aquatic life.
