Bright segment

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004037

A region of enhanced radar reflectivity within a precipitation system, often appearing as a horizontal band at or just below the melting level. This feature is caused by the increased reflectivity of melting ice particles (snowflakes or graupel) as they become coated with water. It is a strong indicator of the presence of a melting layer and the transition from ice to liquid precipitation.
