Nor’west Arch

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007620

A band of high white lenticular cloud on the lee, eastern side of New Zealand's South Island, curved like an arch across clear blue sky beyond the Southern Alps. It is a foehn cloud: the hot nor'west wind drives moist Tasman Sea air up the mountains, which strips out its moisture on the western slopes and leaves the Canterbury plains in rain shadow. The arch is also called the Canterbury arch.
