Nor'wester
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007621
A strong, warm, and dry foehn wind that blows from the northwest across the Southern Alps of New Zealand, particularly affecting the Canterbury Plains. This wind develops as moist air is forced to rise over the mountains, losing its moisture as precipitation on the western side. As the air descends on the eastern side, it warms and dries adiabatically, often leading to clear skies and high temperatures.
