Canterbury northwester

A warm, dry Foehn wind that affects the Canterbury Plains on the South Island of New Zealand, originating from the northwest. This wind develops as moist air is forced to rise over the Southern Alps, losing its moisture through precipitation on the western side, then descending and warming adiabatically on the eastern side. It is often associated with clear skies and increased fire risk.
