Canting angle
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010419
The average angle of orientation of non-spherical hydrometeors, such as raindrops or ice crystals, with respect to the horizontal plane. Aerodynamic forces cause falling raindrops to flatten and oscillate, while electric fields can align ice crystals, resulting in a non-zero mean canting angle for the particle population. This property is detectable by dual-polarization weather radar and affects the differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) measurements used to characterize precipitation.
