Buffer factor
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004067
A dimensionless quantity that describes the sensitivity of a system's equilibrium state to changes in a particular input or forcing. In the context of ocean acidification, it quantifies the resistance of seawater to changes in pH as carbon dioxide is absorbed. A higher buffer factor indicates a greater capacity to absorb CO2 without a large change in pH.
