California plotting position
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004113
A specific formula used to estimate the probability of exceedance or non-exceedance for ordered hydrological data, such as annual maximum flood flows or extreme rainfall events. It is one of several plotting position formulas used in frequency analysis to assign a return period to observed data points. The formula is typically given by m/(n+1), where m is the rank and n is the total number of observations.
