An archaic or poetic name for parhelia, also known as mock suns or sun dogs. These are bright, sun-like spots of light that appear in the sky, often flanking the sun within a 22° halo. They are an atmospheric optical phenomenon caused by the refraction of sunlight by plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere.
