Cloud motion vector
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010436
A measurement of wind speed and direction derived by tracking the movement of clouds or water vapor features between successive satellite images. These vectors are calculated automatically by cross-correlating patterns in images taken at short intervals, typically 5 to 15 minutes apart. Cloud motion vectors provide wind data over large oceanic and remote areas where conventional observations from radiosondes or surface stations are sparse.
