Cluster ions
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004460
Molecular ions that are surrounded by one or more neutral molecules, which are weakly bound to the central ion by electrostatic forces. These formations occur in the upper atmosphere and in laboratory settings where gas-phase ions interact with polar molecules. The stability of a cluster ion depends on the strength of these intermolecular bonds and the ambient temperature.
