Consensus averaging

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010442

A method in ensemble forecasting that combines the output from multiple numerical weather prediction models or model runs into a single, averaged forecast. By calculating the mean of the ensemble members for a given variable, such as temperature or pressure, this technique smooths out individual model errors and outliers. The resulting consensus forecast generally provides a more reliable and skillful prediction than most of the individual members from which it is derived.
