Elmo's fire
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005349
A weather phenomenon consisting of a luminous plasma, or corona discharge, generated by a strong atmospheric electric field. It appears as a bright, glowing light, often blue or violet, on pointed, grounded objects such as ship masts, lightning rods, aircraft wings, and church steeples during thunderstorms or volcanic eruptions. This discharge is caused by the ionization of air molecules in an electric field exceeding approximately 3 million volts per meter.
