Estimated ceiling
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005471
The height above the Earth's surface of the lowest layer of clouds or obscuring phenomena aloft that is reported as broken, overcast, or obscuration, when the ceiling is not directly observed. This value is determined by an observer's judgment, often based on visual cues or knowledge of local conditions. It is reported in aviation weather observations (METARs) when a precise measurement from a ceilometer is unavailable.
