Freon

A commercial name for a group of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) and hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) compounds, historically used as refrigerants, propellants, and solvents. These chemicals were found to be highly destructive to the stratospheric ozone layer. Their production and use have been largely phased out globally under the Montreal Protocol due to their environmental impact.
