Halons
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006163
A class of synthetic chemical compounds containing carbon, bromine, and other halogens such as fluorine or chlorine. Due to their high effectiveness in extinguishing fires, they were historically used in fire suppression systems, particularly in aviation and high-value electronics environments. Production of halons has been phased out under the Montreal Protocol because their bromine atoms are extremely destructive to the stratospheric ozone layer.
