Frost ring

A structural anomaly in the annual growth rings of trees, characterized by a band of damaged or abnormal wood cells. This damage occurs when freezing temperatures kill cambial cells during the growing season. Frost rings serve as dendroclimatological indicators, providing evidence of past severe cold events.
