Geoid

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005910

The theoretical shape of the Earth's surface that would coincide with mean sea level if the oceans were allowed to flow freely over the continents, influenced only by gravity and the planet's rotation. This equipotential surface is irregular and undulates due to variations in the Earth's gravitational field caused by uneven mass distribution. The geoid serves as the reference surface for measuring precise elevations, such as the heights of mountains and the depths of the ocean floor.
