Gravity current

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006043

A horizontal flow of a fluid driven by density differences, where a denser fluid displaces a lighter fluid. In the atmosphere, examples include sea breezes, thunderstorm outflows, and cold fronts, where colder, denser air spreads out under warmer, lighter air. These currents are characterized by a distinct leading edge or head.
