Gray absorber

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006048

A hypothetical substance or atmospheric layer that absorbs radiation with an absorptivity that is constant across all wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. This concept is an idealization used in radiative transfer models to approximate the behavior of real atmospheric gases. A gray absorber's emissivity is equal to its absorptivity at all wavelengths, a direct consequence of Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation.
