Indicator function

A mathematical function that takes a value of one if a certain condition is met and zero otherwise. In atmospheric science, it can be used to define regions or periods where specific meteorological events or thresholds are present. For example, an indicator function could represent the presence of precipitation or temperatures above a certain threshold.
