Interstadial

A relatively warm phase of a glacial period, characterized by a temporary retreat of ice sheets and glaciers. These periods are shorter and less pronounced than interglacials, which are full warm periods between major glaciations. Interstadials are identified through analysis of ice cores, marine sediments, and terrestrial deposits.
